Human history has always been told from the objects we use. With the intense pace of change, the old and the new succeed each other very quickly, profoundly transforming our perception of the passage of time. A good example of this can be told when we think about the recent history of cell phones.
Today, it is easy to see the powerful smartphones with touch screens, high-speed 4G connections, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and even barometer as commonplace. But it is interesting to remember the humble origins we had, from the time of the “bricks“, from the distant past of the pocket phones we have today. before the iPhones e Galaxys, we passed huge cell phones, with antennas, flips and batteries that lasted a week.
The 90's represent a completely different world than the one we live in today. And, in Brazil, it was told like this:
Motorola PT-550
O Motorola PT-550 was the first cell phone in Brazil, arriving along with the mobile phone network in Rio de Janeiro in 1990. Most of you will remember it as the brick, with more than 22 centimeters and 348 grams – or 2,7 times the weight of the iPhone 6.

Motorola StarTAC
Inspired by the communicator that the crew of the ship Star Trek used in the American series of 1966, and in that same year the Motorola StarTAC, the successor to PT-550. Instantly, he became the rage among executives.
The first flip phone in history, it was small and light, measuring 9,4 cm by 5,5 cm and weighing 88 grams – smaller and lighter than most current models. And it still brought a new function: it was one of the first models to have the option of vibrating instead of ringing.
Nokia 6110 and 5110
in the year following the Nokia arrived with the 6110. It was the beginning of the bar cell phone era. One of the highlights was the powerful 84 by 48 pixel monochrome screens – to compare, the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S6 is 2560 x 1440 pixels. The early 2000s were dominated by affordable cell phones from Nokia – known both for their almost endless battery, and for their resistance to make anyone envious. One of the first successes of the brand was the model 3310.
In addition to the battery brick, which reached an absurd 245 hours in stand-by, was also famous for the game snake II, popularly known as “snake”, and which was present in several models of the Nokia as 1100.
Siemens A55/ C60 (Sandy and Junior Mobile)
With the advent of polyphonic sounds, ringtones that resembled music were in vogue. THE Clear and Siemens decided to take advantage and made a partnership with the duo Sandy and Junior, in high among the youth of the time, to sell their models A55 e C60, aimed at teenagers.
Nokia N-Gage

The model line was more basic, and even for the time it came with almost nothing, but at a very affordable price – which was great in the Brazilian market and quickly made the model popular.

O Sony Ericsson W800i it was the first cell phone of the line Walkman, and it was not named for nothing. In addition to a cell phone, the cell phone also functioned as a MP3 players. The 34 MB internal memory wasn't enough to play many songs, but it came with a 512 MB memory card – a fine thing for the time.
