Despite the production of the second season of Severance having started in its year of release, it was affected by the Hollywood actors and screenwriters strikes, which also caused delays in several other series that will be released in 2025, such as, for example, the fifth season of Stranger Things, from Netflix.
Another problem that also caused the delay was a fight between the producers and showrunners of production. According to an article published by TVLine in April 2023, Dan erickson e Mark Friedman fought behind the scenes, citing hostile climates and disagreements over the direction of the scripts and increasingly large budget overruns as the main reasons for the conflict.
Ben Stiller, the production director, would have been responsible for calming Dan and Mark's spirits so that the second season could finally be released.
What is Ruptura about?
The original production of Apple TV + shows a dystopia that makes us follow the day to day life of Mark (A), who works at a company called lumon. All employees who accept to work at lumon They need to go through the rupture process, which basically, through a chip implanted in their head, separates their professional life from their personal life.
When this chip is activated, employees forget that they have a personal life and family outside the company. It is as if all their emotions and memories are “turned off” in favor of good performance at work. The company’s cycle worked very well until the arrival of Hello (Britt Lower) to the team, which begins to question the rupture process.
When you leave the lumon, the person goes back to interacting as if they didn't work at the sinister location, not remembering anything that was discussed (or done at the lumon). And the next day, when the chip is activated again, none of the events experienced while she was away from the company are remembered.
The series makes a separation to help us understand the concept: the innies (which can be translated as internal) have this name because they have the consciousness to work within the lumon. The outies (which can be translated as externals) are the “versions” of the employees with emotions. It can happen that the outies take actions that impact the lives of the innies, which is, in fact, the main point of the last episode of the first season.
A big question surrounding Rupture is what the employees do. Those who watched the first season only learned that the team of four protagonists does microdata management work, which basically consists of selecting the correct numbers on a computer. The new season is expected to bring this and other answers.
Fans speculate that the lumon be it a resurrection or cloning company (in dystopia, anything goes, right?). This is because, in the trailer released during CCXP 2024, it was said that the work carried out by employees is “one of the most important for the new generation”. But, nothing else was said. Check out the trailer below:
Where did the first season leave off?
The end of the first season of Severance was abrupt. In a ten-minute final scene, the characters who went through the rupture process managed to wake up even though they entered the lumon and finally discover what your life is like outside the company.
Hello is, in fact, Helena Eagan, heiress and public defender of lumon, whereas, Mark finds clues that his late wife, Gem, is alive, but disguised as Ms. Casey, advisor within the company. We also discovered that Mark He chose the process of breaking up as a way of avoiding mourning his wife, who, until then, he thought had died.
The biggest fan theory is that this news that the characters managed to cause a revolution is a big lie told to them (and to us) so that no more revolts happen. What do you think? Tell us in the comments Comment!
Topics covered in the new season
The second season of Severance will show how this moment of revolution for the characters impacted the world they live in. The synopsis is quite vague, but it gives us a preview of what to expect:
In season two, Mark and his friends discover the dire consequences of playing with the separation barrier, which leads them down a path of misfortune.
Severance Season 2 Synopsis.
Each character must be worked on in a completely different way by the producers. Firstly, Hello, is now at an impasse: when he is working on the lumon, she tries in every way to leave the company and its entire authoritarian system; but, outside the company, she is a great defender of the process and the daughter of the company's CEO. lumon.
already talking about Irvin, there are many doubts about what happened to him, precisely because he paints works with the image of the elevator lumon, the moment the rupture chip is activated. Fans theorize that the character may have gone through several resets and, when he is out of lumon, your mind is trying to send subliminal messages.
Another big question is around Mark: What will he do after discovering that his wife is supposedly alive? When he regains his memories of his real life, inside the lumon, now that you've managed to break the chip? These are questions that will be answered in the new season of Severance.
Gem, presented to the audience as an advisor to the lumon and later revealed to be Mark's wife, is a big mystery: we still don't know if she is really dead or is the result of a copy based on Mark's wife.
Fans also suspect that Gem may be in a coma and in the new season we will find out how the feelings of outtie of Mark, mixed with his hymn, will impact your relationship with the character played by Dichen lachman.
Lastly, Harmony Cobel, Played by Patricia Arquette, is a big fan of the founder of lumon, but there is one point: she was fired from her position at the end of the first season. What comes next?
In the new episodes, we will discover her possible personal connection with the company's practices and mainly find out if she seeks revenge, redemption or is just a fanatic who does everything to make the rupture process grow more and more.

What does the series creator say?
Dan erickson, creator of the series, said he considers the new season of Severance “much better” than the first, which earned a mere 14 Emmy nominations. He also mentions that he realized the responsibility of making a new season amidst so many fans. See an excerpt from his interview with GamesRadar +:
I was in therapy because of all the wonderful feelings I was getting from people responding to the show and the surprise of it. I really thought it would be a much more niche audience. So you think: 'How do I avoid disappointing these people who have suddenly invested a little piece of themselves in this program?' Knowing that we will come back and film this again, I don't want people to come back and spend months and months filming something that doesn't live up to the quality of the first season. So it was really intense.
