The election of a new president for the United States is a subject that could impact many international relations, and everyone is watching to see whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris will take over the world's largest economy. We have put together five options for you to follow the results of the American elections, whether via PC, iOS or Android. Check them out now!
How are US elections counted?
Brazil has one of the most advanced voting systems in the world, which means that results can be released on the same day. However, the time required for the US is longer due to the voting system, which uses paper ballots.
The popular vote in each state determines which candidate will receive that state's electoral college votes, which is the actual mechanism for choosing the president. It will take 270 electoral votes to win the 2024 presidential election.
Each state has a specific number of electoral votes, proportional to its population, and the candidate who receives the most popular votes in the state wins all of that state's electoral votes (except in Maine and Nebraska, which divide proportionally).
The counting process is done like this: after all the votes are received (whether it’s a mail-in ballot or a ballot that’s been cast at a polling place), there’s an individual count in each county and the results are reported at the state level. States like Florida and Texas have a big impact because they have a lot of electoral votes.
Poll closing times vary from state to state, with the first batch of states closing at 21 p.m. EDT on November 05. Results from some states will come out later in the evening: polls in California, for example, don't close until 01 a.m. on November 06, followed by Hawaii at 02 a.m. and finally Alaska at 03 a.m., also on November 06.
Although newspapers already indicate a victory in the US Presidential elections in the same week of voting, this is only made official in December, when the members of the Electoral College (also called designated electors) meet in each state to formally vote for the president and vice president, according to the popular result of the state.
When will the US election results come out?
The dispute between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump for the position of President of the United States is extremely fierce and, for this reason, the result may take longer to be announced.
If there is a difference of just one percentage point, a recount may be necessary, further delaying the announcement of the results. And we also remember that there are votes from 50 states and one federal district to be counted, so the results of the US elections will most certainly not be announced before November 06th. In previous years, the average time for the announcement of the results was two days. Other factors such as legal challenges can also cause delays. In 2024, more than 100 pre-election lawsuits have already been filed. See the history of other US presidential elections for an estimate:
- 2020: The election took place on November 3. However, US TV networks did not declare Joe Biden the winner until late morning on Saturday, November 7, after the outcome in Pennsylvania became clearer.
- 2016: When Trump won the Presidency, he was declared the winner shortly before 03:00 a.m. (in Washington, DC) the day after the election.
- 2012: When Barack Obama secured a second term, his victory was projected before midnight on election day itself.
- 2000: The election between George W. Bush and Al Gore was a notable exception. The vote was held on November 7, but the two campaigns got into a tight race in Florida, and the race was not decided until December 12. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled to end the state's recount process, which left Bush as the winner.
