Anticipating announcements for MWC 2024, Qualcomm updated its portfolio of chips for routers with a focus on offering greater 5G internet infrastructure for residential internet around the world. The new generation, which takes the name of 5G FWA Ultra Gen 3, arrives to use less electricity and deliver high-speed wireless connection, in addition to beginning the task of leaving fiber internet, quite common in Brazil in the past. Understand the details.

What is Fixed Wireless Access?

Most famously in the last three years, a connection like fixed wireless access (also known as FWA) consists of using radio waves to provide high-speed Internet access in geographically limited areas. The signal is sent from two points: an antenna that receives the signal and the device that has technology to capture the internet signal.

One of the most seen advances is that areas further away from urban centers can have access to 4G and 5G networks without problems. Generally, the signal-emitting antenna is located on the roof or wall of the company or house that contracted the service.

The idea is to allow these rural locations not to depend on wired internet and, contrary to what people think, the FWA It wasn't enough to replace Wi-Fi. In fact, the Wi-Fi we know is still the best option for locally distributing the internet signal to notebooks, smartphones and tablets.

FWA in Brazil

The internet and infrastructure via fiber optics, currently available and widely used, is the main reason for fixed wireless access not be a widespread option in Brazil. Its use depends on investment from large telecommunications companies, and in addition, labor costs must be lower than fiber, whose aerial infrastructure and the use of Chinese equipment make investments in the sector cheaper.

It is also worth remembering that FWA technology was prioritized to be launched in emerging countries and, even in these places, it goes through the implementation process. According to research by Bain & Company, the estimate is that 12 million people are using the FWA until 2027, a number considered high for a recent technology on the market. In this case, we have the opposite of what happens in Brazil: the high cost of implementing fiber ends up encouraging the use of FWA USA.

Regarding Brazil, it is estimated that of the 48 million fixed broadband internet connections that should exist by 2025, only 6,4% would be in the FWA modality. By 2027, this number could reach 13%, considering a more optimistic scenario.

Ultra Gen 3 Advancements

Taking up less space on the router and also consuming 50% less electricity than the previous generation, the chip Ultra Gen 3 offers high performance and internet with a frequency of 6 GHz (mmWave) for antennas installed in the FWA network.

The most interesting feature is artificial intelligence that adapts signal sending according to the weather conditions outside the location where the antenna is installed. A Qualcomm also guarantees that the new chip will offer “reliable and seamless connectivity, even in challenging environments”.

Another new feature is the interface that allows companies to develop internal and external resources that can be installed by customers themselves. It was also confirmed that the Ultra Gen 3 arrives to adapt to demographic needs without leaving the delivery of high-speed connections.

The Qualcomm 5G Fixed Wireless Access Ultra Gen 3 platform is a game changer for operators seeking next-generation connectivity solutions. With its unmatched performance, advanced features and cost-effectiveness, it puts mmWave FWA at the center of every next-generation broadband planning decision.
