On its third day of announcements, Apple refreshed its notebook lineup with the launch of a new MacBook Pro, which has options of M4 chip, M4 Pro and the unprecedented M4 Max, focused on high-performance activities. Check out all the details right now.
Design
In addition to being released in the traditional silver color, Apple took the opportunity to launch the new MacBook Pro in an unprecedented space black color. The company also mentions in the press material that the notebook was designed with an exclusive alloy that uses 100% recycled aluminum in its structure. See it below:
Additionally, 100% of the rare earth elements in all magnets are recycled, and 100% of the tin in solder, gold in plating, and copper in various printed circuit boards are recycled. The official weight of the 14-inch model is 1,55 kg and the thickness is 1,55 cm, while the 16-inch model weighs 2,14 kg and has a thickness of 1,68 cm.
All variants also feature Touch ID, which can be used both to access the operating system and to validate online purchases, avoiding the typing of sensitive data when in public.
Fabric
The new Macbook Pro line has two screen options: a 14-inch with a resolution of 3024 x 1964 pixels and a 16-inch with a resolution of 3456 x 2234 pixels. Despite the difference, both have a nanotexture layer that allows the screen to be used in environments with high sunlight, the same seen on the iMac introduced by Apple on Monday.
The displays also feature a peak brightness of 1600 nits when displaying HDR content, in addition to having a 120Hz refresh rate that adapts according to the activity displayed on the screen. Thanks to the Thunderbolt 5 connection present in models with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, Apple laptops can support the display of 6K images on up to three monitors, with a refresh rate of 60Hz.
Processor
CPU
The new 14-inch Macbook Pro hits the market with the new M4 processor seen in the iMacs, iPad Pro and Mac Mini presented by Apple during the year 2024. The traditional M4 has 10 cores in the CPU.
According to Apple, the new 14-inch Macbook Pro with M4 can offer:
- Up to 7x faster image processing in Affinity Photo compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Intel Core i7 and up to 1,8x faster compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1.
- Up to 3x faster 10,9D rendering in Blender compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Intel Core i7 and up to 3,4x faster compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1.
- Up to 9,8x faster scene edit detection in Adobe Premiere Pro compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Intel Core i7 and up to 1,7x faster compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1.
Moving on to the 16-inch Macbook Pro, it has two processor versions: M4 Pro (seen specifically in the more complete Mac Mini presented by Apple yesterday) and the M4 Max, which was launched by surprise.
The M4 Pro with a 14-core CPU (10 of which are performance cores and four are efficiency cores, for much higher performance with multiple cores) is up to 1,8 times more powerful in terms of CPU performance.
The M4 Max chip comes with a 16-core CPU that delivers performance up to 3,5 times better than the M1 Max, speeding up heavy work on visual effects, 3D animation and soundtracks, according to Apple.
GPU
The 14-inch MacBook Pro has a 10-core GPU, while the M4 Pro chip has a 16-core GPU. Apple noted that the 14-inch model can deliver up to 13,3 times faster gaming performance. World of Warcraft: The War Within compared to the Mac Mini with Intel Core i7.
Another interesting fact is that, compared to the MacBook Pro with M4 Pro presented today, it applies up to 1,8 times more audio effects plugins in a project than Logic Pro, renders graphic animations in RAM up to 2 times faster in Motion and also finishes 3D renders up to 2,9 times faster in Blender.
The GPU also allows up to three displays to be connected at the same time on all Mac Mini models, either via Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5. The GPU in the M4 Max chip, present in the 16-inch MacBook Pro, includes two ProRes accelerators, with the MacBook Pro having the capacity to edit in Final Cut Pro 4K ProRes videos at 120 fps recorded with the new iPhone 16 Pro.
Neural Engine (NPU)
As standard, all Macbook Pro models have an NPU, the chip focused on artificial intelligence activities, with up to 16 cores. When equipped with 128 GB of RAM (called unified memory by Apple), the model with M4 Max can interact with large language models that contain almost 200 billion parameters.
All new Apple laptops support the Apple Intelligence platform, which not only allows access to smarter Siri, but also allows the use of writing tools through the functionality Rewrite.
The Mail app has also gained artificial intelligence tools and can now organize emails and set priorities according to your routine. More tools such as emoji generation and better use of Apple Intelligence will be released by the end of the year.
Anyone who buys one of the new Macbook Pros will also be able to use OpenAI's ChatGPT without needing to create an account, giving it a more dynamic feel. It's worth noting that currently, anyone who wants to use OpenAI's AI needs an account, so this will be the first time Apple has removed this requirement.
System
O macOS Sequoia 15.1 It comes installed from day one so that in addition to Apple Intelligence, owners of the new Apple laptops can also mirror the screen of their iPhones without any delays. It will be possible to reply to messages, listen to music and more.
Audio
There is a sound system with six high-fidelity speakers and force-canceling woofers, an interesting factor for those who work with visual or audio content production. For video calls, the processors can also perform noise reduction so that the user's voice is clear to whoever is on the other end.
The new notebooks also feature a 3,5mm headphone jack and HDMI 2.1 output. And you can listen to audio in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos on built-in speakers, as well as Spatial Audio with Dynamic Head Tracking using AirPods 3rd generation, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Max.
RAM memory
The 14-inch version of the MacBook Pro 2024 has three RAM options: 16 GB, 24 GB or 32 GB. The most complete version, 16 inches, starts with 32 GB of RAM, but the option with M4 Max processor allows you to put up to 128 GB of RAM in the Apple laptop.
Internal storage
The 14-inch MacBook Pro can be purchased with three internal storage options: 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. The 16-inch Macbook Pro arrives in the Brazilian market with options of 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB and 8 TB. The models have SSD.
Connectivity
The models are similar in terms of wireless connectivity: both have an antenna with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
Speaking of ports, the 14-inch Macbook Pro has three USB-C ports with support for the Thunderbolt 4 standard. Apple put the same USB-C ports on the 16-inch model, but this more expensive version follows the Thunderbolt 5 standard, to perform data transfers at up to 120 GBP/s.
Both notebooks come with an HDMI port for audio and video transmission and an SDXC card slot.
Webcam
Rounding out the details is a 12MP webcam that makes video calls in HD quality (1080p). Apple highlights the neural processing of all M4 chips that can keep the user centered on the image seen by the people on the other side, called Center Stage.
There’s also the Table View feature, which adds a new dimension to calls, plus studio-quality microphones.
Price and availability
The price of the 14-inch Macbook Pro starts at R$19.999, and can reach up to R$34.109 in its most complete version. The 16-inch Macbook Pro is being sold in Brazil from R$31.999, and can reach up to R$90.199 in its most complete version.
Pre-sale starts today at Apple's official website and a delivery date has not yet been announced. In the US, delivery begins on November 08th.
