Have you ever thought about going out in a car without worrying about forgetting your driver's license? This is already possible with the use of Digital CNH, available through the application Digital Transit Card, developed by the Federal Data Processing Service (Serpro) in 2018. In other words, as long as your driver's license is valid, its digital version will be recognized by inspection bodies throughout the country.
This initiative is part of the efforts that the Federal Government has been making to digitize several important documents and services for the population, making the daily lives of Brazilians easier. In fact, the application created by Serpro allows access to the electronic Vehicle Registration and Licensing Certificate (CRLV-e), issued since 2020 only in the digital version.
Although it has been around for some time, the process for downloading a driver's license on your cell phone is even easier. Previously, it was necessary for your driver's license to come with a QR code, which only started to happen in May 2017, so if yours didn't have one, you would have to issue a second copy or wait for the document's renewal date.
However, with the change in the CNH's validity period in 2021, all valid licenses currently have a QR code, which has brought changes – and ease – when using the virtual document.
What is a digital driver's license?
A Digital Driver's License is nothing more than a smartphone version of the traditional driver's license, with the same design and the same information as the physical version, available in the app Digital Transit Card for Android (play store) e iOS (App Store).
It was created to make everyday life easier, as people could often forget to get their driver's license when leaving home in a hurry. With a digital version of your driver's license on your cell phone, recognized throughout Brazil by inspection bodies, if one day you forget to get your physical license you won't have any problem if you are stopped on the street or on the highway – as long as your license is valid.
Another point is that after you download the digital driver's license, it will be available on your cell phone even without internet.
Just like the physical version, the digitalized version has the same expiration date, updated in 2021 and which varies depending on the driver's age:
- 10 years for drivers up to 49 years old;
- 5 years for drivers between 50 and 69 years old;
- 3 years for drivers over 70 years old.
How to download your digital driving license on Android or iPhone (iOS)
Now that you know what this document is, it's time to learn how to use the digital driver's license:
- Before thinking about a digital driver's license, you need to have an account gov.br. If you already have it, skip to step 2. If not, just access the login area of the official government website, enter your CPF, click Continue (the process is the same via desktop and cell phone) and follow the instructions that will appear.
- Get the app Digital Transit Card na Play Store to Andorid ou App Store para iPhone.
- Open the app from Digital Transit Card and log in with your account gov.br.
- Please click Conductor, the first item in the list in the menu that the screen opens (in green), and then click Qualification e Download CNH-e (Electronic National Driving License).
- Enter your driver's license registration number and security code in the indicated fields (if you don't know where they are, just click on the question marks and the application will indicate where to locate them on the physical card).
- You will then need to create a four-digit password, which you can use again to download documents if you exit or uninstall the application. If you prefer, you can accept the suggestion to use biometrics as a way to access the document in the future.
- By following these steps, your digital driver's license will be saved in the application, opening with or without internet. However, you also have the option to save the wallet elsewhere on your phone by clicking Export
Services available on the Digital Traffic Card
In addition to allowing people to download and use their driver's license on their cell phone, the Digital Traffic Card application has other features.
Conductor
In the area of Conductor, you will find your Digital CNH, being able to download and export the document. Other services available in the area are Positive Registration (or National Positive Driver Registry), a government initiative that aims to encourage good driver behavior through tax or tariff benefits for those who join, such as discounts from insurance companies, tax exemptions, special conditions for vehicle rentals, toll, among others.
If your driver's license category is C, D or E, that is, those used for work, you can also use the Drivers area to access information about carrying out toxicological tests and specialized courses, such as transporting emergency or school vehicles.
Finally, you can also access the Parking Pass, a mandatory document to be able to use specific vacancies. In this case, for now it is only possible to download the elderly credential, if you are over 60 years old, through the app, following the instructions below:
- Open the application in the area Conductor, click Parking Credential and then click Elderly Credential
- Please click Download credential on the next two screens that appear and then, after the document has been generated, click on the share icon in the bottom left corner to save the document on your cell phone (or send it to your email, for example) and then print
Vehicles
Em Vehicles, second option in the menu, in yellow, you can access information regarding the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Certificate (CRLV), a document issued annually indicating that the car is released for circulation on the streets and roads of Brazil. As of 2020, the document began to be issued only in the digital version.
If you have one or more vehicles in your name, you can use this area of the application to check whether there is a recall being carried out, the car's licensing, check restrictions and indications (sale, fine, theft, among others), and even make the transfer of the document in case of sale.
If you are the owner of the vehicle but not the person using it, you can indicate the Main driver in the specific section of the application. Therefore, if you receive infractions, the score will automatically be computed in the license of this registered driver.
Another important feature for those who share a car is sharing the CRLV-e (the car document) with other drivers. Since 2022, the physical document (which came on green paper) is no longer issued by Detran, and you can share its digital version with up to 5 drivers — and it is also possible to print the document on plain paper, if you want to keep a copy in the vehicle.

The third section of the home menu, in dark blue, is infractions, where you can monitor infractions by people (in this case yourself) and by vehicle (if the vehicle and the CRLV-e is shared by more than one person, the infractions made with it will be available to everyone). It is possible to indicate, through the application, who was the offender and make payment, which can come with up to 40% discount.
Education
The last option on the menu is Education, in light blue. In this section it is possible to follow the campaigns and projects carried out by the Federal Government — currently, the Government is running a campaign against Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika.
