How to avoid scams when making donations
Unfortunately, many criminals use the floods in Rio Grande do Sul and its socio-financial calamity to apply blows. These malicious people take advantage of everything from generating images and formats that resemble those of entities, non-governmental organizations, banks and companies to manipulated videos using images of influencers and famous people inciting the victim to fall for the scam.
With advances that are more difficult to perceive, attention must be redoubled. So read some tips that we have separated for you make donations to Rio Grande do Sul without worrying:
- Pay attention to the relationship between pix key and linked person/bank: Many artists, influencers, entities and even the government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul created new bank accounts to receive this contribution. When you register the pix key with your bank, in the “Transfers” area, the name of the person or company appears along with the bank linked to the key. Always read carefully, searching for the name of the individual or legal entity on social media and the internet.
- Check authenticity: Following in addition to what was said in the last line above, check the veracity of the details of the account to which your donation will be allocated. Play the pix key on Google; check whether the company/NGO is recognized and legitimate, as well as its work and engagement in social actions; and call representatives, volunteers or other donors who know or work at the company/NGO. These are safe paths that you can adopt.
- Access the donation link on official channels; be wary of links sent personally: Avoid clicking on links sent via WhatsApp, email or other more impersonal messaging channels — even if sent by people you trust. Only click on crowdfunding links on official websites of companies and NGOs committed to the action.
- Donate using your bank’s channels: Do not make your transfer using alternative payment channels. Always prefer to carry out your transaction through your bank's application to avoid traps, centralize your payment and for practicality in itself.
- Do not ask for personal information: Banks and financial institutions will NEVER ask for your personal information for transfers, especially PIX, with exceptions. Therefore, if you receive a message from a person or social media account asking for your CPF number, credit/debit card or password, do not provide it.
- Search Google for current scams and be aware: Nothing better than being aware of the scams most used by criminals at the moment. Look for “scams” on Google and in serious media outlets and protect yourself by using the information — and pass the news on to your colleagues, friends and family.
- Don’t give in to “urgent requests”: Some scammers use the urgency of the situation that Rio Grande do Sul faces to pressure victims for an immediate donation, who act without thinking. Don't fall for this talk. The situation is indeed critical, but reconstruction is being done little by little.
- If you are afraid, look for other ways to donate.: Even so, if you still feel insecure about donating your money to the cause, there are other ways to collaborate with the victimized citizens of Rio Grande do Sul. Donate basic supplies, mattresses, sheets, toys, clothes and shoes and other resources at registered points.
