Understand how LG NanoCell brings smart sound and video technologies to the comfort of your home

In 2020 we had the arrival of the line LG NANOCELL, a nanoparticle technology in LCD displays that results in very high quality. To better understand how each technical specification of the models works, we talked to Peter Valery, a TV specialist and strategic partnerships for the brand, which tells us everything from the operating system to the image and sound technologies of the different models.

How are the TVs of the LG NanoCell 2020 line divided?

This year LG brought to Brazil 5 models of the line. There are 3 with 4K resolution – NANO81, NANO86 E NANO90 – and 2 TVs with the current maximum, 8K resolution: a NANO95 e NANO96.

What are the main differences between the LG NanoCell 4K and 8K models?

In addition to the screen resolution, the devices are equipped with different processors, increasing the ability to work with artificial intelligence in 8K models. The Alpha9 (8K) and Alpha7 (4K) processors evaluate the image and sound of the content that the user watches, to improve them in real time and adapting them to the brightness of the room.

Is it worth investing in an 8K TV? Do you have content for it?

There is already 8K content on YouTube and on some platforms, but the biggest advantage of 8K is actually reducing that feeling that you're seeing dots (called pixels) on big screens. This increases the sense of realism. In addition, as with 4K TVs, upscaling technology is present, an artificial intelligence feature that improves images at lower resolutions to get close to 8K quality.

What video standards are available?

The main video standards that the LG NanoCell line supports are the DolbyVisionIQ and HDR10, used by movie studios and present in streaming services such as Netflix. They evaluate each item in the scene, making light areas even more intense and making dark regions even more defined. Dolby Vision IQ is able to make frame-by-frame adjustments so you get the best picture.

And the audio standards?

Here we have the Dolby Atmos, a very high quality audio standard that guarantees an immersive 3D experience. It gives the impression of being enveloped by the sound, even if you don't have a home theater. The improvement in the sound perception of objects and movements in the scene is notable.

How does LG NanoCell line integration work with the connected home? Do all models talk to Alexa and Google Assistant?

LG was the first company to bring support for Google Assistant and Alexa on TVs in Brazil. By pressing a button on the remote, you can send commands to the TV like “start the Narcos series on Netflix” or “turn off the lights in the room”. If you have an LG smart air conditioner, you can control it too, without leaving the couch.

In 8K models, this integration is even easier thanks to the hands-free function, which eliminates the need for a controller. The TV has a microphone that understands you directly, just start the command with “Hi LG…”. LG TVs also support the Apple Home Kit meaning the entire ecosystem of Apple connected products will be at your fingertips.

In the year of the arrival of Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, an essential question: what are the advantages for gamers?

Yea! These TVs from the LG NanoCell line have an HDMI 2.1 input, essential to ensure that your console reproduces images at maximum quality, at up to 120 frames per second.

And the Filmmaker Mode? How does it work?

This is a novelty of the year. Filmmaker Mode is a standardized picture setting created by an association of film directors to ensure the film is viewed the way the filmmaker expects. When turned on, it automatically activates when it realizes that you are watching a movie or series that requires this quality. It is important that this activation is automatic, as it happens on LG TVs, because this mode darkens the image (better for the movie moment) and disables features that would be advantageous in other situations, such as watching sports matches or playing video games.

And webOS, the operating system for LG TVs. Why is it better than the competition?

LG's system is unbeatable because it's the easiest to understand and use. Even those who have never had an LG TV can quickly familiarize themselves with the menus, download apps and use the Magic Remote, a kind of control that recognizes your movements and moves a cursor on the screen, like a mouse, which is exclusive to the brand.

Finally, LG also makes TVs with OLED technology, right? Which is better, NanoCell or OLED?

The LG NanoCell line is already considered a category of premium TVs from LG, made of nanocrystals that deliver vivid colors and an excellent level of contrast. Our OLED panels go even further, as they are composed of pixels that self-illuminate independently, making this type of TV have even more intense colors and the famous “pure black”.
