Launched in 2021, but little known by Brazilians, the Special Return Mechanism is a complement for those who want recover Pix payment after going through a scam. O MED It can be requested by anyone and the value returns in less than a week, here's how.
What is MED?
Created in October 2021, a year after Pix was launched in Brazil, the Special Return Mechanism, also called MED, is the procedure adopted by the Central Bank to help people who made bank transfers to scammers. It may not seem like it, but scams like these are more common than we think.
The solution was created precisely so that anyone who has experienced a scam can recover Pix made, after an analysis of the transaction being carried out with the two banks. As soon as the report is sent to the banks, the partial or total blocking of the account that received the money from the bank is done by the central bank.
In what cases is it possible to use it
All cases of possible scams on Pix can be reasons to activate the MED. This applies to transfers of any value, without a minimum or maximum limit established by the central bank.
Imagine that, for some reason, you were convinced to make a transfer of R$500,00 to a scammer and, just a while later, you realize that you fell for a scam. Then, there is the possibility of contacting your bank and asking for a review of the transfer so that the procedure can begin.
It is important to have all the data, such as screenshots, conversations and even information about a possible call that prompted you to make the transfer. Any evidence that helps you prove that you have been scammed must be considered.
Step by step to recover payment with Pix in case of scam
With the scam confirmed, there are some steps you need to follow to be able to trigger the MED and get the money back. As we said previously, it is important to have as much proof as possible for the transfer to return to your account. See the step by step.
- First, contact your bank — via app, telephone or any other means of communication. It is important to explain the entire situation from the beginning so that nothing wrong is sent to the bank that handles the potential scammer's account.
- Your bank, after receiving the report, will contact the scammer's account bank. The response must be sent within a maximum of half an hour, according to the Central Bank's own rules.
- As soon as the response is sent, the account that received the Pix will be partially or completely blocked, depending on whether the amount you sent is still in the scammer's account.
- With the information in hand, both banks (the one with your account and the one with the scammer's account) have up to seven calendar days to carry out the analysis of the scam, with a response being sent shortly afterwards. In the meantime, the scammer's account cannot be operated.
- If the scam is actually proven, the amount will be returned to your account within 96 hours, but remember that this refund can be full or partial.
Information you need to know: it is possible to recover Pix payment within 80 days from the date you made the money transfer. And it is worth remembering that, if the scam is not detected, the amount will be released to the destination account.
Be careful when making transfers
Unfortunately, more and more scams are emerging and it is very important to be careful not to lose money due to a simple oversight. Brazilian banks continue to update their systems and techniques to avoid scams, but it is worth being suspicious of anyone who asks you for money to send or release some amount of money or even a product.
Furthermore, transfers to scammers' accounts can be avoided if you are careful when finalizing the transaction. When you identify a Pix key that may belong to a scammer, an alert message may appear to you. Just in case, check that everything is ok and you will actually receive what was promised.
It's also worth confirming the person's identity if a family member has contacted you asking for unscheduled money. Messages sent via WhatsApp are easier to believe, so call and confirm that the person you are requesting is really who you think you are before making the transfer.
