The first M was released on November 13, 2013 and, since then, the Motorola has established itself as one of the main smartphone brands in the world. We were invited by the company to visit one of the two Brazilian factories, more specifically the one located in Jaguariúna-SP. Check out details about this success and information about how a smartphone is manufactured until it reaches stores.
The success of the Moto G line
Only in Latin America, the Motorola, under the control of Lenovo since January 2014, is the second most popular smartphone brand among consumers. In 2023, the milestone of 200 million devices in the Moto G line was reached. It is also worth remembering that in January 2020, the number of 100 million devices sold in this line was reached.
The line M was introduced by Google and, some time later, it became popular with Brazilians and consumers around the world. There is no denying that the Motorola is not known: in Argentina, it is the brand that sells the most cell phones.
Since the launch of the line Edge e RAZR, the brand now focuses on growing even further in the premium market. At the same time, it was highlighted that some features from these more expensive categories should also reach cheaper models without the need for high investment on behalf of the end customer.
Regarding data from Brazil, the Motorola states that it is the brand that sells the most cell phones in Brazil and, during 2013 and 2023, saw its market strength grow 20 times. O Moto G82 has an acceptance rate of 92% among its buyers, while Moto G73 e Moto G84 recorded acceptance of 91% and 92%, respectively.
A Motorola also mentioned that the brand name is the main factor in a person's choice when looking for a new cell phone and features such as design, camera, storage and more are only considered when the manufacturer is chosen.
The Motorola factory in São Paulo
Currently, the company has two factories in Brazil: one located in Jaguariúna-SP and the other in Manaus-AM. What does the showmetech was invited to visit only meets the demand of the state of São Paulo and has 1600 human employees, but also has interesting automation. There, a smartphone is manufactured every 1,5 seconds. The manufacturing process is carried out by Flexctronis.
The factory Manaus It has this location due to low taxes: cell phones manufactured in this location are sent to other states in Brazil. The company also has 3 other factories around the world: one in Wuhan (China), one in India and one in Argentina. The factory in China is the one that produces the most Motorola smartphones, but it is India that sends devices to the USA.
The work of manufacturing cell phones in Jaguariuna It is quite automated: machines work on most of the processes and humans only act as reviewers of the entire process and when finalizing cell phones.
The first process includes assembling circuits on a board and at the same time four cell phone boards are assembled at the same time. Then, when the boards have all the necessary circuits, humans finish the assembly: they fit the camera, buttons, screens and other parts.
When a cell phone is “ready”, more tests are carried out so that the models do not leave the factory with defects. At this stage, both humans and robots are involved so that nothing wrong happens. In addition to resistance, the level of radiation emitted (by 4G and 5G antennas) and even the video stabilization sensor are tested.
As soon as it goes through all the assembly and testing processes, the cell phones go into boxes and are sent to stores throughout the state of São Paulo.
We remember that there is a fragrance of Firmenich in the box for newer models. This company has been creating fragrances, flavors and ingredients to delight the senses for over 125 years and the smell can be smelled in every device launched by Motorola since 2021, including new moto g54 e moto g84 announced in September 2023.
What does Lenovo prepare for the future?
A Motorola announced that it is very focused on investing in artificial intelligence for various features on smartphones. In addition to its devices already taking better photos and recording videos with the help of AI resources, the company is also preparing new features that draw from this same source to create wallpapers using a user's photo as a base, for example.
Another new feature, still being tested, is the possibility of scanning crumpled documents and this being corrected directly on the screen. Do you spend a lot of time erasing personal information in screenshots? Motorola is also preparing an assistant that puts a blur effect on personal data and user names.
Finally, with the tree of generative AIs, an in-app feature Moto Notes was presented to summarize long texts was presented to the journalists present at today's event. All the new features presented work without internet dependency, a detail that should be one of the highlights of models from different brands next year.
