It's decided! The film Ghost Portraits, by director Kleber Mendonça Filho, will be Brazil's representative in the race to try for the 2024 Oscar. The documentary produced by Cinemascope Produções managed to beat 27 other competitors who tried for the same spot and can now get a nomination for the main world cinema award, in the categories of “Best International Film” and “Best Documentary”.
The story of Phantom Portraits
Director responsible for works such as Bacurau (2019) and Aquarius (2016), Kleber Mendonça Filho, this time, gives the public a documentary about the way cinema influenced one of the country's main capitals: Recife, in the state of Pernambuco.
Set in the XNUMXth century, the film presents an original theme that uses the display of archive images, photographs and moving records to tell how events dictate the city's social behavior.
Representative of Brazil at the Oscars
The choice announced on Tuesday afternoon (12) was made by Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Visual Arts. The committee responsible for the decision met and opted for the work of Kleber Mendonça Filho. The film, which is approximately 1 hour and 31 minutes long, beat 22 other competitors and “qualified” for the Brazilian pre-list, which was revealed on September 5th.
Ghost Portraits it competed directly with five other features: Strange Way (Guto Parente), Alien Nights (Sergio Carvalho), Our Dream: the story of Claudinho and Buchecha (Eduardo Albergaria), buzzards (Claudio Borrelli) and Toll (Carolina Markowicz), who was his main “opponent”.
