This Thursday (17) the Google held the event Safer with Google, which brought together leaders from the company's data security area in Brazil and around the world and journalists to discuss this very important subject. O showmetech was present and we bring you the news.
Google: Safety First
During the event Safer with Google we heard a lot about how the issue of user safety is crucial for the company, whether when surfing the Internet, or when using services such as gmail and the Google Drive. But do we know all the company's protective measures?
According to a ranking made by Electronics Hub, Brazil is in 2nd place in the list of countries that spend more time on the Internet, second only to South Africa. Google is concerned with offering tools and technologies capable of protecting this public.
Incidentally, according to the company, Brazil is also the biggest target of cyberattacks in the world, having had an exponential increase in these crimes in recent years — many of these attacks carried out in the financial market, against companies and individuals.
“According to a report by FortiGuard Labs, in 2022 Brazil recorded more than 103 billion cyberattack attempts, representing a 16% increase compared to 2021 […] a recent survey by Google Trends, revealing that the use of strong passwords increased seven times in Brazil in the comparison of the last five years with the previous period.”

Due to these issues, Brazil becomes a field of study in the issue of cybersecurity and data protection at Google.
AI Technologies in Google Security
Many of us already know or have heard about the two-step verification method, passwords with special characters, authentication byCAPTCHA to confirm that you are not a robot, but do you know what's behind all this? What engineering and tools are used to ensure our online security?
Artificial intelligence, so popular in recent times, has been a great ally of Google for over 10 years. The company has a “digital immune system” that improves and learns from network threats, helping to develop new security technologies to prevent future attacks.
“Promoting advances in digital security is no longer a possible issue on a human scale, this challenge needs to be complemented with high-level technology. At Google, we believe that AI offers the way to help us respond to these challenges and stay ahead of today's threats efficiently, effectively and at scale."
Royal Hansen, Vice President of Privacy, Security and Protection Engineering at Google
Access keys are another example of the use of AI by Google, which do away with the need for passwords to access websites and online services, replacing the access code with digital or facial biometrics.
O gmail also has AI in its programming, responsible for detecting spam in the email inbox, preventing the user from falling into Phishing e malwares.
The Brazilian engineering offices of the Google are responsible for developing anti-abuse solutions for various company products.
“We will continue to invest in our local engineering efforts in Brazil and rely on local talent and demand to help solve cybersecurity issues globally.”
Royal Hansen, Vice President of Privacy, Security and Protection Engineering at Google
During the event, Google took the opportunity to launch a novelty: the Transparency Center, a page that explains the general view that the company has on the subject, what investments are being made, policies and responsibilities.
Google Cloud
With social relations becoming more and more digital, the issue of cybersecurity and data protection becomes an increasingly high priority. If I can resolve banking issues on my cell phone, there is no need to go to a branch. The attacks in turn also increase, which was why the Google Cloud created the solution Anti Money Laundering AI, which is already used by HSBC to detect and alert money laundering crimes. The tool has already reduced alerts for this type of crime by 60%.
“As an AI first company, whose mission is to organize the world's information and make it accessible to everyone and which has security as one of its main pillars, Google always seeks to share its knowledge and solutions with the market, in order to contribute to making other companies safer and, consequently, their end customers.”,
Marcos Cavinato, Head of Security and Compliance at Google Cloud for Latin America
Another interesting tool of Google Cloud and VirusTotal, a website capable of detecting fraud in links, documents, IP and other Internet addresses.
Parental control and child protection
Safety for minors is also an essential agenda in the Google: The company does not allow children under 13 to create standard accounts, but it knows that they have access to screens at an earlier age. Therefore, it adopts security measures to make the online experience of children something pleasant and free of dangers, of course, with the supervision of parents and guardians.
O Family Link is an app that allows parents to create supervised accounts and configure screen time, apps, manage account data, and view their child's location. O Google kids space is a children's mode created for the little ones to explore the digital world safely, through games, books and videos. O YouTube Kids, known to many parents, manages age-appropriate video content for children.
O Google Play has a stamp tool “Teacher Approved”, which brings together apps that help develop important skills in childhood. We still have lesser known tools, like the SafeSearch that prevents inappropriate content from being displayed in the search results of the Google, a default setting for all accounts.
Insurance with Google
The company is committed to seeking solutions that please its employees and customers, and also makes efforts to adapt to all the requirements of the General Law on Data Protection (LGPD) which completes five years of existence this week.
