The process of choosing the 3rd CEO in Microsoft's history has been dragging on for 5 months. Satya Nadella, a Microsoft employee for 20 years, is about to win the race.

Bloomberg news portal reported yesterday that Satya Nadella, 46, is the favorite to succeed Steve Ballmer as CEO of Microsoft. The decision must be taken – and announced – by the company's board by next week.

Nadella received a degree in electrical engineering from Mangalore University in his hometown of India, and moved to the United States to pursue a Masters in Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin. He also holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Chicago.

In 1992, after working at Sun Microsystems, Nadella was hired by Microsoft. He worked in the Online Services division and was one of those responsible for the development of the search engine Bing. He also headed the Business division, overseeing the development of one of Microsoft's biggest revenue streams, suite of productivity Office.

He is currently executive vice president of the division Cloud and Enterprise, which encompasses Microsoft's cloud computing services and development tools, such as Windows Azure, Windows Server, Visual Studio and SQL Server.

The appointment of Satya Nadella as Microsoft's chief executive is also expected to affect the company's board. Independent director John Thompson – who is leading the search for the new CEO – is tipped to replace co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates, in the presidency of the body. Gates would still have a chair as a director on the board, but would focus on specific areas such as innovation and product development.

Since the current CEO Steve Ballmer announced in August that he intended to retire, several candidates were considered for the position, including: Alan Mulally (Ford CEO), Steve Mollenkopf (Qualcomm CEO), Hans Vestberg (Ericsson CEO), Stephen Elop (Nokia CEO, about to complete acquisition by Microsoft), Tony Bates (former Skype CEO, also acquired by Microsoft in 2011) and of course Satya Nadella.

Although the gavel has not yet been beaten, company officials consulted by journalist Kara Swisher of the re/code website say that the name of the CEO needs to be defined “immediately” as important decisions regarding the restructuring of Microsoft are being delayed until the new leader takes office.
