More than a year after having apparently abandoned the 5G chip development market, Intel last Thursday (6) revealed the T700 5G, 5G modem developed in a partnership between the company and MediaTek.

Based on the Helio M70, a modem launched by MediaTek in May of last year and which was developed to be used in smartphones of the intermediate type, the T700 works with sub-6 technology (a type of 5G signal below 6 GHz frequency, which offers slightly lower speeds but with a much more stable connection quality), giving full support to this technology both in networks that use part of the LTE structure (4G) to work as well as those that have their own infrastructure.

The official announcement also reveals that Intel's role in the partnership was to ensure the integration between systems (the chip and Intel's computers and notebooks), develop optimization and validation platforms and provide all necessary assistance to manufacturers that will use the T700 on your machines. This means that the entire architecture and manufacturing process of the modem itself was the responsibility of MediaTek. (ausoma.org)

According to Joe Chen, president of MediaTek, the partnership with Intel was something that came naturally with the growth of the company's 5G division, and was a unique opportunity for the company to expand beyond the smartphone market and also enter the smartphone market. computers.

The reveal of the chip T700 occurs about a year after the Intel have sold the company's entire modem division to Apple, after having gone through many problems in the development of its first 5G modems.

When will the first computers with the T700 5G be released?

In the official announcement of the new component, Intel and MediaTek revealed that the T700 has already undergone field tests that attested to the component's ability to make calls and connect to the internet using 5G networks, so there is a good chance that the first devices using the chip will not take so long to be launched on the market.

In an interview with the Android Authority website, the vice president of Intel's mobile platforms division, Chris Walker, revealed that the company should start shipping the first development kits that use the T700 to his customers by the end of this quarter (that is, by the end of September), and he expects the first notebooks with the component to be released in early 2021.

Although Intel and MediaTek are working towards the first notebooks with the T700 arrive relatively quickly in the market, companies are racing against time as they are “behind” in the race for computing with 5G support. This is because companies like Dell and Lenovo, which use Qualcomm modems, are already launching their first notebooks with support for 5G networks this year.
