Before the emergence of The Game Awards, the gaming awards scene was characterized by a diversity of events and ceremonies, although none reached the magnitude and global scope that the TGA conquered later. Some notable awards, each with their specific characteristics and focuses, exist to this day, such as the BAFTA Game Awards, carried out by British Academy of Film and Television Arts and DICE Awards produced by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.

Among these events was the Spike Video Game Awards (VGA), broadcast by Spike TV, an American television channel, which became popularly known as the “Oscar” of video games in its time. Unlike other awards shows at the time, the event was pioneering for not only presenting awards, but also for including announcements of new games, exclusive trailers and appearances by celebrities related to the video game industry. O VGA aimed to provide an entertaining spectacle for viewers, combining the celebration of achievements in the gaming industry with entertainment elements such as live musical performances and comedy segments.

In 2010, gaming journalist Jeff Green harshly criticized the show. He regretted that the Spike TV decided to focus more on the show than on the video game community itself. Green said this resulted in appearances from celebrities who “didn’t want to be there or didn’t know why they were there.” In the following years, criticism persisted to the point of leading to the end of the VGA, which had its last edition in 2013.

One of those responsible for awarding the Spike TV it was the journalist called Geoff Keighley. After disagreements with the event organizers, he chose to leave the team and started working on his own project, which was later named as The Game Awards. The awards debuted in 2014 and quickly established itself as an influential platform for the gaming community and the industry as a whole.

O The Game Awards celebrates achievements in several categories, such as Best Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Soundtrack, among others. Furthermore, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, VGA, the event also features announcements of new titles, exclusive trailers, and live musical performances. O TGA has become an important milestone in the gaming industry, providing a stage to celebrate and recognize the developers, creators and games that stood out during the year.
