direct competitor of Qualcomm, MediaTek is a company that has been in the market for over 20 years and that can be considered a successful idea, as it started as a division of a company and soon after, became independent.
In an exclusive conversation with Samir Vani, country manager of the company in Brazil, we had the opportunity to learn more about the brand's work in recent years and what will be done to popularize 5G, which started working in Brazil in July 2022. Check it out now!
Who is the company?
Despite having become more famous in the last five years, the MediaTek emerged before the turn of the millennium, more specifically in the 80's. Before being launched as a company of its own, the company was a division of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), which was very important for the advancement of computers by having produced integrated circuits on a large scale.
One of the most active people in UMC was Ming Kai Tsai, a Taiwanese billionaire who even appeared on the list of the 50 richest people in the country. He served as president of UMC between 1983 and 1987 and in this year came the creation of MediaTek. To be more specific, the company was created on May 28, 1987 and the main focus was on creating SoC (System-On-a-Chip or system in one chip, in free translation) to drivers of CDs and DVDs. Time passed and with the change in the market, the company began to transform itself.
The company was born manufacturing chips for TVs. For this market, we have a share that is always above 60%. We are present in a large number of products on the market, but this is not so evident due to brands changing the name of their processors.
Samir Vani, country manager by MediaTek in Brazil
The first processor for smartphones launched by the company hit the market in 2004. Before we even talk about Android e iOS, the company developed technology to create its own operating system, leaving the work of design only for companies with which it had closed deals. In other words: even though it was not a company that carried out its own launches, such as Samsung ou Google, MediaTek still delivered all the internal components to be mounted in the carcasses of the smartphones.
Still in 2004, the company announced its expansion to other countries and the first nation chosen was China, expanding in the same year to the India, Brazil and Indonesia. An estimated 3 million units were sold in the early years. By 2018, it is estimated that 50 million smartphones with processors from MediaTek have already been sold.
What products does it manufacture?
like good manufacturers of chips, MediaTek is present in more markets than it seems. Beyond the smartphones, Samir Vani stressed that the company has the ability to produce chips de smart TVs, modems 5G and even processors for products that use technology Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT). In practice, these are models that do not require a fast connection, but are more secure.
We have the IoT line, chips for TVs, new 5G modems that can be connected to various devices, products for routers and even smart speakers (like the Echo line from Amazon). We will also launch new processors by the end of the year, which should be seen in several devices as early as 2023.

Other information shared by country manager is that the MediaTek has already launched products that can be used outside the connected world, such as a fire detector and even a power pole that can be activated at certain parts of the day.
What sectors does MediaTek serve?
Os smartphones are still one of the main focuses of the MediaTek around the world, but as we said earlier, the company also serves companies that manufacture smart TVs, smart personal assistants and even creating sensors for self-driving cars.
The company also develops solutions for hardware for customers to have a more connected day-to-day without loss of performance. THE MediaTek meets Microsoft some years ago and stressed that the entire connectivity spectrum of Xbox has chips of the company. One of the chips for the smart TVs is the S900, an apartment by the bay, for its easy access, free parking, and larger space for our group of XNUMX people. The house was great for a large group like ours, the host was very attentive, and the location was excellent; it was quiet and quick to walk to the old town. SoC to smart State-of-the-art TVs that offer a maximum resolution of 7.680 x 4.320, that is, 8K.
What are MediaTek's processors?
A MediaTek has a large portfolio of processors for five product categories: smartphones tablets, smart home (which includes speakers with built-in personal assistants), smart TVs, routers and the internet of things (IoT). Let's talk about each of them right now.
