In this criticism, as spoilers, we will analyze the construction of the film and each character in the plot:

PLOT: Willy Wonka's youth

Willy wonka is a young cook whose dream is to open a chocolate store capable of changing people's lives. The genial boy, full of good intentions, lands in a new city and leaves for Gourmet Gallery in order to fulfill his greatest desire, but it seems that things will not be as easy as he had planned.

A Gourmet Gallery is the place where the biggest chocolate makers in the world are found, but the strong competition will make you Willy Wonka have to fight hard for their space.

The plot, at first glance, seems simple and innocent, a young chocolatier full of dreams and fanciful ambitions and with peculiar skills, such as producing chocolate that makes people fly. But throughout history we see Willy facing real problems, such as bribery, corruption, poverty and hard work.

And it's when he realizes that he's in the real world, and not in his dream factory, that things start to happen: wonka matures as we approach the climax of the plot. At the same time, the script works so brilliantly that even in the face of serious problems, such as death threats, the characters do not lose their fun and charismatic essence. There are dreams and desires spread everywhere and the magic never breaks.

main highlights

I want to congratulate especially the Timothée Chalamet, who has proven himself to be an extremely versatile actor in his acting roles. The secondary and supporting characters are also a spectacle in themselves, with special mention to Noodle, Played by Calah Lane, a little orphan girl who crosses the path of wonka and it is crucial in its trajectory. You know you will be moved by their relationship, right from their first conversation.

Another character that stands out in the plot and is crucial to its development is the Mr Slugworth, Played by Paterson Joseph, one of the chocolatiers at Gourmet Gallery. I want to congratulate again the incredible performance of these professionals who made the film especially delightful to watch.

The humor present in the plot, music and dialogue is another highlight of wonka: it's that classic theater humor with innocent double-meaning jokes and twists in the characters' interactions, which makes you laugh because of the nonsense that was just said or because of the broken expectations.

Yes, the movie wonka is a children's musical, directed by Paul King, director of The Adventures of Paddington and produced by david hayman de Harry Potter e fantastic animals. Musical films always end up taking the same risk: they are brilliant and manage to capture the audience right away, or they are unbearable and make you want to leave the movie theater after the third choreographed musical number.

Like every magical film aimed at children, wonka It draws heavily from the source of theater when it presents caricatured characters with mannerisms and performances that are beyond dramatic, but this characteristic can either bring the audience closer or distance it if it is not well executed.

In this case, wonka He did very well, even too well, I must say. The musical numbers, dances and performances make sense and fit the plot very well, they are not just there to be a fun addition to the story, but to tell you parts of it, reinforce feelings and put you in the character's shoes. You feel every emotion and sometimes you feel like crying.

The film's scenography and photography are also highlights of the film, the work done to deliver the playfulness of the story in convergence with a sad atmosphere full of conflicts is impeccable.

During the songs we can see the atmosphere changing completely, the colors becoming more vivid, the world becoming lighter, this is all the merit of the South Korean director of photography Chung-hoon Chung, who also acted brilliantly in Oldboy.

I can't forget to talk about the film's special effects. wonka which are fun in themselves, all done in a caricatured way, but convincing with the aspects of the story, special mention to the appearance of the oompa loompa which is a direct homage to the 71 film. Still regarding the effects, they are the more which adds magic and fun to this recipe.

The actor Hugh Grant, who interpreted the oompa loompa accompanying wonka It's always a lot of fun when he's on stage.

Conclusion

Wonka is a musical full of magic
Lots of magic and fun in the Wonka musical (Photo: Warner)

I was positively surprised by the film wonka and with the actions of Timothée Chalamet; I watched the film without much expectation and afraid of witnessing an embarrassing or ridiculous experience. As I said before, there is a very fine line between bad and good musicals for cinema and, thankfully, wonka did very well.

The film captivates from start to finish and from the first scenes you already feel immersed in the narrative and magical atmosphere that wonka and your friends bring with them. The plot also makes several references and homages to the first version of The fantastic chocolate factory back in 1971 and to the great actor and screenwriter Gene Wilder, the first Willy Wonka of the cinemas.

I finished the film with tears in my eyes and with my inner child very happy, I felt the same feeling as when I watched children's films in the 2000s like Nanny McPhee – The Enchanted Nanny (2005) that have this air of magic in the air. And of course, I left the cinema and bought some chocolate to satisfy my craving.

wonka It's the perfect holiday movie to watch with the whole family. There in R, it has an 84% critical approval rating so far, so it's worth it!
